Misleading Trails

China Art Archives and Warehouse, Beijing
July 14 - September 30, 2004

Artists: Ai Weiwei, Enrique Chagoya, Vernon Fisher
Hai Bo, Hong Hao, Dan Mills, Xiaoze Xie

At first glance, the work of this group of artists from China and the United States is misleading; it appears simply to be about the depicted subjects. Closer viewing reveals complex and layered meanings, sincere and subversive strategies, biting humor and very serious intent, veneration and critique. In visually and intellectually compelling work that investigates history, art, cultural and personal experience, the artists create provocative art filled with layered images and information, leading the viewer away from their initial response, and down numerous trails full of unexpected meanings.

Traveled to: NIU Art Museum, Northern Illinois University, Jan. 10 - March 13, 2005; University Art Gallery, University of North Texas, April 16 - May 26, 2005; Hanes Art Gallery, Wake Forest University, Aug. 22 - Sept. 2, 2005; Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery, Oct. 13 - Dec. 9, 2005; Boyden Gallery, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Jan. 17 - March 4, 2006; Schick Art Gallery, Skidmore College, July 13 - Sept. 22, 2006; Samek Art Gallery, Bucknell University, Oct. 6 - Nov. 13, 2006
